The South Winnipeg Action Team (SWAT) has learned that the proposed City of Winnipeg’s 2018 Operating Budget has no money set aside for a Regional Recreation Facility for South Winnipeg in the coming year or for the next FIVE years.
South Winnipeg residents, please help highlight the importance of building a new recreation complex to serve the expanding South Winnipeg area. We need to work together so our municipal politicians make the recreation infrastructure deficit that exists here a priority. For three years, SWAT has have been working with the city to move this important project forward. When Waverley West was designed, previous City councils had not properly planned for the development of a recreation complex as no land was set aside, and there was no funding for design and building. Some progress has been made in that the City has earmarked capital to acquire land.
Here is what you can do to help increase awareness and put this in the fore front of our municipal politicians:
- Attend SWAT’s community meeting on Saturday, December 2 at 10:00 at South Winnipeg community centre located at 666 Silverstone (often called Silverstone or Richmond arena) to discuss the issue.
- Attend the City of Winnipeg Executive Policy Committee meeting at City Hall on December 5 at 9:00 am. Chuck Davidson and Craig Sheldon will be there representing SWAT and South Winnipeg Community Centre and need South Winnipeg residents to join them.
- Watch for messages on Twitter in the coming days. Follow the South Winnipeg Community Centre account. Every retweet will go a long way to highlight the importance of this issue to South Winnipeg residents.
