2017-18 Update: Beginning this season, Hockey Winnipeg has eliminated the Minor Bantam and Minor Midget categories. The AA Hockey Program will keep Minor Bantam (13) and Bantam (14) divisions in 2017-18. The Midget AA division is for players ages 15, 16,and 17. Players from SWHA who wish to try out for the Twins AA Hockey program can find information on the Twins website.
The number of players registered within the SWHA boundaries determines how many A-Hockey teams SWHA can host according to Hockey Winnipeg guidelines. In recent years SWHA has combined tryouts and team formation with the Fort Garry North Hockey Association (FGNHA) to provide access to all levels of play (A1, A2 & A3).
Try-outs are held each year to place players onto appropriate teams. The highest ranked players are placed on an A1 team, the next highest on A2, and the next on A3.
Preseason Ice (ages 13+)
Players ages 13-17 have 1 hour of preseason ice included in the registration cost. September is a busy hockey month. 13-17 year-old players are often involved in AA, AAA and High School tryouts that conflict with the preseason skate schedule. Due to all the inevitable schedule conflicts, SWHA limits our preseason schedule, but we recommend all players supplement this 1 skate with additional hockey conditioning prior to tryouts.
SWHA preseason ice (1 skate) is open to all *registered players, including players involved in the AA/AAA/High School tryouts.
Player Development Program (PDP )
For Bantam (13/14) players looking for a September conditioning and skills development program, SWHA hosts the Preseason Development Program (PDP) at Richmond Kings Arena (5 hours).
On ice instruction during the preseason is provided by Keane Hockey Programs. Billy Keane has 27 years experience as a full time hockey development professional. He is an assistant coach with the Winnipeg South Blues (MJHL) and has coached at various levels in minor hockey, AAA, MJHL, and University teams. Instructors are all qualified hockey instructors chosen and trained by Billy. Each one hour session consists of “skills and drills” and scrimmage time.
*Note: Participants must be registered with SWHA prior to attending preseason skates or tryouts. High School hockey is a separate program in Winnipeg. Players who wish to attend preseason skates or AAA, AA, A1 or A2 tryouts must register through SWHA first to be eligible to attend. See AAA and High School Information for details.
Direct Entry Game Schedules and Standings are available on the Hockey Winnipeg website.
