Off-Ice Officials: Timekeepers
The Off-Ice Official — commonly referred to as the Timekeeper — plays a vital role in every hockey game. Responsible for accurate timekeeping, penalty tracking, and game sheet documentation, timekeepers ensure the game runs smoothly from the sidelines.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate the time clock
- Record goals, assists, and penalties on the official game sheet
- Track penalty times for each penalized player
- Communicate clearly with on-ice officials as needed
All Hockey Winnipeg timekeepers must register annually, including those exempt from attending a clinic or writing the exam.
Timekeeper Levels & Training
Timekeepers are categorized by experience level:
| Level | Description |
|---|---|
| Level 1 – Year 1 | First-year timekeepers (any age) — attend in-person clinic |
| Level 1 – Year 2 | Second-year timekeepers — attend online clinic |
| Level 2 | Third-year timekeepers — attend online clinic |
| Clinic Not Required | Fourth year and beyond — no clinic required, but must register annually |
How to Register
To become a certified Timekeeper with Hockey Winnipeg, follow these steps:
- Eligibility: Must be at least 13 years old
- Contact: Email your Referee-in-Chief to express interest
- Paperwork: Complete the required forms (provided by the Referee-in-Chief)
- Access Code: Approved applicants will receive a registration code
- Clinic Sign-Up: Use your code to register for a Timekeeper Clinic
- Clinic + Exam: Attend the clinic and successfully pass the exam
Timekeeper Clinics
- Clinics are scheduled by Hockey Winnipeg during September/October
- Space is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis
- Receiving a registration code does not guarantee a clinic spot — register early!
